July Malea Letsebe – In 2003, July had severe TB which resulted in permanent loss of his right lung function.

Following counselling from the Waterberg Welfare he went for an HIV test. The results showed his cd4 count was only 27 (a normal count is 800). With ARV treatment and support from the clinic, he regained his health and weight. His community witnessed a dying, bedridden man walking again. He believes he was given a second chance and wants to use his life to help others. His new calling is to educate, empower and help others in his community in their understanding and handling of HIV and AIDS. To do this, July became a home based carer and counsellor for the Waterberg Welfare Society. July’s example and willingness to disclose his status publicly, despite the negative reaction from his family and friends, was an example and inspiration for others. He runs a support group of 40 HIV positive people, all of whom July has personally visited, cared for and counselled. He runs educational programmes, income generating initiatives and above all encourages his support group to accept themselves and be positive in whatever they do.
