She trained with, and works for Phakgamang Re Risane Ba-Phalaborwa in Namakgale. Yvonne’s objective is to help each patient back onto their feet. As with all home based care givers, she cooks, cleans, washes, clothes, feeds and helps patients with exercises and the correct medication dosage but more than that Yvonne is renowned in her organisation for taking time to befriend each patient. She uses personal time to talk with, counsel and socialise with patients and takes them on visits to socialise with others. She acts to each one as a true friend would. One of Yvonne’s patients (who due to the stigma
remaining in that area about HIV cannot be named) bedridden from AIDS was rejected by her family and neglected. She attributes her return to health, newfound hope and ability to look after her sister’s 3 year old boy directly to Yvonne. Yvonne works voluntarily and her work is her priority. She says that she “just wants to assist and be a helping hand in her community”.
