ISDN stands for Integrated Services Digital Network, and is a digital telephone connection that gives you more bandwidth, and thus speed, than your regular telephone line.

For the first time a dial up medium for video, text, images and sound has become available. Previously, it was necessary to have a phone line for every device which you wished to use simultaneously. Transferring a file to somebody while talking on the phone, or seeing their live picture on a video screen would require several separate telephone lines. With ISDN, it is possible to combine many different digital data sources and have the information routed to the proper destination.

Digital versus Analogue:

For voice transmission the current analogue system works well enough, but today much of the equipment we link to our telephone network is digital as well. Computers, fax machines, image servers, sound recording and medical imaging systems are all digital.

Therefore, a modem (modulator - demodulator) is necessary to turn digital pulses into analogue pulses (and vice versa) for transmission over a telephone line.

With an ISDN connection no conversions between analogue and digital signals take place. A higher data throughput is possible with virtually no transfer errors.

Subscribers connecting with a standard modem to a M-Web ISDN PoP also benefit from the digital technology. Only one conversion from digital to analogue takes place between the Telkom exchange and your modem.

Advantages for Internet users:

Speed: With an M-Web ISDN account, your throughput will be 64 Kbps.

Flexibility: ISDN can be used for various applications such as voice data calls, faxing, video-conferencing and high speed data access simultaneously on one line.

Cost Savings: ISDN is a cost effective technology to use for Internet access where fast access is required for short periods of time.

Better Connecting Time: ISDN has a logging on time of one second, as opposed to the 10 - 15 second period most of us are used to.
