ISDN stands for Integrated Services Digital Network, and is a digital telephone connection that gives you more bandwidth, and thus speed, than your regular telephone line.
For the first time a dial up medium for video, text, images and sound has become available. Previously, it was necessary to have a phone line for every device which you wished to use simultaneously. Transferring a file to somebody while talking on the phone, or seeing their live picture on a video screen would require several separate telephone lines. With ISDN, it is possible to combine many different digital data sources and have the information routed to the proper destination.
For voice transmission the current analogue system works well enough, but today much of the equipment we link to our telephone network is digital as well. Computers, fax machines, image servers, sound recording and medical imaging systems are all digital.
Therefore, a modem (modulator - demodulator) is necessary to turn digital pulses into analogue pulses (and vice versa) for transmission over a telephone line.
With an ISDN connection no conversions between analogue and digital signals take place. A higher data throughput is possible with virtually no transfer errors.
